5 Must-Reads To Prepare For 2018

must reads - BLOG.jpg

Alright people - we are nearly two and a half months away from 2018!

I know that is hard to believe, and I certainly am not trying to wish away the last part of this great year, but who says you can’t start preparing a little early? Besides, we may be more successful in our New Year’s resolutions if we just did a little soul-searching to get our hearts ready before hand.
This list is a compilation of books that I have either been influenced and changed by or a trusted friend or relative has recommended. I hope you enjoy and maybe even pick up a copy or two next time you are at the book store or browsing Amazon!

1. Counter Culture by David Platt

Ever wonder how the world we live in today got this bad? Ever think you contribute to it? Why don’t you put yourself out there to gain a little perspective on the toughest of topics of today by reading International Mission Board president, David Platt’s book and bible study combo.

Counter Culture speaks about fighting against the waves of culture and society all while bearing Jesus’s name. I won't lie to you -- you will feel uncomfortable. This study will challenge you to step out radically on topics like racism, sex, human trafficking, and poverty - just to name a few. So if you are needing your foundation shaken a bit in 2018, take a stab at this incredibly inspiring, life changing book and bible study.

2. Uninvited by Lysa TerKeurst

Ever feel alone in your troubles, regrets, rejections and doubts? Then Lysa TerKeurst may just be your God-sent. Through this easy read, Ms. Lysa shares some of her deepest hurts and personal experiences with rejection and loneliness. From your deepest wounds gained in your childhood or your freshest cuts just made yesterday, there is something to be said for acknowledging your hurts, finding the correct care for each one, and allowing them to heal in freedom. Uninvited will uncover pains and bitterness in your life that you didn’t know even stemmed from loneliness or rejection. But the best part about this book to me was that she not only guides you as a victim of hurt, but she teaches you how to never be the source of others rejection and loneliness.
Let’s break down some barriers while we can in 2017!

3. Finding I AM by Lysa TerKeurst

Disclaimer - if you are going to purchase this book, I would suggest also investing in it’s DVD series as well! Finding I AM takes Jesus’ “I AM” statements in the Bible and provides background and history to the promises that He still holds true today. In her DVD’s, Ms. TerKeurst walks the streets of Israel, only to give a greater perspective and meaning to Jesus’ words. I know many people who have done this study, and each one of them said they wish they would have started it sooner. Be prepared to feel known, loved and all the more cared for by your Heavenly Father. “Jesus not only cares about this deep, spiritual wrestling, but He also wants to step in and see you through it.”

4. The Reason For God by Timothy Keller

If you are looking to combat doubt and skepticism, then The Reason for God will be an incredible resource for your deeper-reads collection! If you ever wonder why you believe what you believe or if you have recently been doubting your faith, look no further. Dr. Keller takes some of the most controversial questions and topics in Christianity and provides deeper meaning and explanations for each. Though the topics discussed in this book can be heavy, Dr. Keller does an incredible job of relating its content to any level of reader. “To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.”

5. Seamless by Angie Smith

Whether you have grown up in the church your whole life or have just recently decided to follow Jesus, this Seamless bible study is seriously for anyone and everyone. I began reading this bible study in January of 2017 after my mom completed it with her women’s bible study group. I couldn’t even get through the study before I started recommending it to my friends. Since then, I gone through it three more times. It totally rocked my world and gave me new perspectives on stories from the Bible that I had never heard. This study hits the highlights of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and explains how promises made in this seamless story written thousands of years ago can be found in our culture today. Seamless will be a resource I continue to reference for years and years to come. A definite must-read to prepare your personal walk with the Lord for 2018!
