What Does Bearing His Image Look Like?

God is wisdom.

God is faithfulness.

He is eternal, unchanging and omnipotent.

His hands hold the stars and the oceans and our hearts in place.

He spoke, and the world came into existence.

Oh, and also…

He made us in His own image.

It's all too easy to get caught up in our own image. We portray ourselves in certain ways, share only the positive aspects of our lives, and set unrealistic expectations for ourselves. We worry about what our friends will think of us, what the neighbors will say and how our co-workers will react to our image.

That being said, it's hard to keep up an image of a perfect put together life. It is draining, and time consuming, and furthermore, impossible. We are all human, all with weak flesh and selfish desires and forever falling short. Perfection is not obtainable, just as a perfect, well curated image is out of reach.

But as Christians, we are created in the image of God. Created by a God who is perfect and holy, the essence of beauty and grace and love. We are made in His likeness and for His glory. But somehow we devote more time to working on and curating our earthly image and impressing the people around us than we do to growing closer to Christ, the one who we are made to be like.

We bear the image of the one true God.

We bear the image of grace and mercy itself.

We bear the image of the Creator of the world,

But yet, have you ever worried about if you will lose followers if you post too many bible verses? Or that your summer isn’t as meaningful because you’re not going on three different mission trips? Maybe you’re going out on a date and you're worried about which dress would make the best impression, instead of celebrating and resting in the fact that you carry Christ in your heart.

When we worry about protecting our image here on earth, we get distracted from gazing on the beauty and fullness of God and the fact that we are made in His likeness. It's difficult to stop the cycle of analyzing and editing our own image into oblivion, but it is so humbling to know that we are made in the image of God, who is goodness and holiness himself. Wherever we go and whoever we encounter in life, we have the opportunity to be a witness as bearers of the image of God.

Instagram is fun. Nailing a presentation or serving God in a remote jungle is amazing.  Being popular feels great. Knowing people love you is awesome. But bearing the image of God in a way that brings Him all the glory and praise is far better than anything our earthly image could ever imagine.

"So, God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them."
