How To Find Rest In The Unrest
My days recently have been filled with running around, meeting after meeting and making my five minute breaks into quiet times. I thought I would finally figure out better time management going into my Junior year of college, but instead I find myself telling others “I am busy” when they ask me how I am doing. One of my dearest friends recently described my life as an ongoing hamster wheel. I’ve learned that when our souls are weary our spirits our weary, and when are spirits are weary we are not able to fully live out of our true identities in Christ.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
The good news is is we serve a God who fills our gaps. He gives us rest when we are burdened. He provides peace in the chaos. He allows us to experience rest for our souls in the midst of an unrestful world.
True rest in our Father doesn't mean that we are escaping from the busyness, meetings, and plans for our day. It is actually right in the middle of the mess.
Our rest is found in Jesus Christ. He fills us with His Holy Spirit, so we are able to experience
the fullness of peace and joy. He provides ease in our souls when the rest of the world is caving
in on us.
How do we get to a place where we can find rest in our unrest?
It is so important to have the word written on our hearts, so that in a moment of anxiety in our
days we are able to turn our hearts back to what Christ says over our lives. A few pieces of
scripture that I have held close to my heart are:
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
“It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect.” Psalm 18:3
Wake Up Earlier
Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice sleep. My day is transformed when I start it with the Father. When we find quiet moments with Jesus, He changes us. He changes our days, our pace of life, our prayers, and our mindsets.
For me this has been huge. I tend to distract myself with filling my schedule to the brim, being with others constantly, and not even allowing myself to take a moment and be alone to rest. We run ourselves thin and when we fail to allow ourselves time with the Father, we fail others. There is no way to truly be the best version of who you were made to be in Jesus Christ until we learn to find our rest in Him.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Let us rejoice in the fact that He has overcome this world, so that we may experience rest in the unrest!
