5 Songs To Bring You Closer To Christ

5 songs.jpg

There is one constant thing in my life where I always feel welcomed; music. Music is a tool I’ve been using since I was five years old to express myself and it reaches depths of me I never knew existed.

When I first started getting into music, I loved the fact that you could listen to it anywhere. Now, it’s even easier with streaming services and portable radios in our pockets. I would notice that while I liked all the current music, there was one type of music that would bring a smile to my face, and more often than not, tears to my eyes:

Christian worship music.

I never knew a song could bring me to tears until I heard a church choir sing Here I am to Worship and the lyrics said “and I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross,” and that spoke to me in ways I still cannot explain to this day.

Often times, like every Christian, I stray away from God. It’s not because I want to, it’s just sometimes life gets in the way. However, the one thing I can always count on to feel God’s love, even if I’m feeling unwelcomed in every other aspect of my life, is my “Jesus Loving” playlist.

There are six songs that I can always feel God’s presence when I listen to them, usually resulting in a major breakdown and prayer session which leads to a happy soul.

I thought I would share my top five songs (in no particular order) with you, in case you needed them:

5. Even If- Mercy Me

Sometimes I forget that even major Christian artists are just like us, they lose some battles too. This song reminds me that they’re normal people too and the line “I know You’re able and I know You can save through the fire with Your mighty hand. But even if You don’t, my hope is You alone.” reminds us that God has you, even if things are not going the way you want, just have a little faith, and that’s all you need. Sometimes my little faith is just what God needs to use me in ways I never could have imagined.

4. Here I am to Worship- Jeremy Camp

I touched on why this song means so much to me a paragraph before this, but I just think it needs to be mentioned again. This song is the first song I can remember singing in church. If you close your eyes and let Jesus fill you while you listen to this song, I promise, there is no better feeling. Again, the “I’ll never know who much it cost to see my sin upon that cross” I can’t explain the love I feel when I hear it. It makes me think of the love God has for us, that he would send His Only Son to die for us, and we will never know how to understand that sacrifice He made for us. Which to me, is insane.

3. God’s Not Dead (Like a Lion) Movie Version- Newsboys

Side note, if you have not seen God’s Not Dead, go watch it. Stop reading, and go watch the movie, I’ll wait.

Done with the movie? Perfect. Now, I like the movie version of this song better because in the middle, you hear commentary from the movie. The actors are putting God on trial and throughout the song, you hear the two main characters’ debate about if God is real or not. On top of that, you hear a song talking about how God is not dead and He’s roaring like a lion.

2. Reckless Love- Cory Asbury

I have grown up in a church setting and to this day I still cannot comprehend God’s love for us. This song multiples that because it reminds us that God’s love is never ending, and God will be there for you, wherever you may be.

I know I said these songs were in no particular order, and that was true for 2-5, but this last song is truly my number one song that has ever been recorded.

1. I Can Only Imagine- Mercy Me

This is also a movie I highly recommend seeing. I Can Only Imagine is a song about what it is going to be like when we get to the gates of Heaven. As someone who likes to think about the future, I never thought this far into the future but after hearing the chorus that says “surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel? Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of You be still? Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall? Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all?” No one knows so this song makes me think of how amazing Heaven will be when “All I would do is forever, forever worship You.”

If you need a song (or five) that can bring you closer to Jesus, these are only some starting examples. Over time, you’ll find your own songs that put you closer to God than you ever thought possible.
